Hello everyone (and I do mean ONE). I’ve had an Xbox360 for about 9 months now. I’ve really enjoyed myself, but it’s time to bite the bullet and expand my gaming experience. I bought a PS3 last night. I’m gonna tells y’all about my first impressions. I’ll try to avoid bias, but I’m sure I let it show a little because of my experience with the Xbox360. Again, this is only about first impressions. It’s not how the PS3 stack up against the 360 overall.
The price was the only reason I waited so long, but I have a Blu-Ray player now so I won’t hold that against Sony.
OK! The first thing I noticed about the PS3 is the single power cable. Having one small cable is way better than the Acme Brick power supply that Microsoft gives you. That’s a plus for Sony. The other second thing I noticed is the standard composite video cable. For 400 bucks, Sony could have at least included a component cable like MS did with the 360. That’s a minus. I’ll go ahead and use the HDMI cable I bought for the Xbox and buy a new one from monoprice.
The console itself is huge. I like the glossy black finish, but, with the USB ports on the bottom they were hard to reach. I had to rearrange my cabinet to set up the PS3 on it’s side so I could reach the ports easier. Not a big deal, though.
The controller seemed light compared to the Xbox controller. I like my controllers to have a little bit of weight. That’s just personal preference, so not a mark against Sony. The controller gets a plus for having a better d-pad and including a rechargeable battery included. You have to pay to get one for the Xbox. I does get a minus, though, for forcing me to charge the controller while the Playstation is on. The cable they give you is really short, and I don’t like sitting that close to my TV. There should be some way to charge the controller without the PS3 being on.
The menu for the 360 is a little easier to navigate, but I think that’s because I haven’t spent enough time with the PS3 menu yet. I prefer the look of the PS3 menu. It seems classier and more adult than the NXE. I do like having game trailers and other videos as well as alerts on new content right in front of me when I turn on the Xbox though, so we’ll call that a tie.
In case you were wondering I played MGS4 for about three hours before I went to bed. It’s kinda slow as far as the pacing goes, but I’m sure it’ll pick up. I’m not gonna compare the gameplay or graphics because that’s on the developers, and I’m not gonna compare the online experience because I haven’t used it yet.
So, based on first impressions what’s the verdict?
It’s a tie! Now all you fanboys need to kiss and make up!
